U.S. Navy Considers Renaming Aircraft Carrier Initially Honoring Doris Miller

Résumé

The Navy is reportedly reviewing the name of a new carrier originally slated to honor World War II hero Doris Miller, with some internal discussions about naming it after President Donald Trump.

The U.S. Navy is evaluating a possible name change for an aircraft carrier that was slated to be called USS Doris Miller, in recognition of the Black sailor who distinguished himself during the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Sources familiar with internal deliberations told CNN that the Navy has entertained the idea of naming the vessel after President Donald Trump, although no final decision has been announced.

Doris Miller, a mess attendant who reportedly shot down several Japanese bombers despite lacking formal training on the weapon, received the Navy Cross for his actions at Pearl Harbor. His citation notes his bravery in moving a mortally wounded captain to safety and operating a machine gun under fire. Miller’s family has long sought an upgrade of his award to the Medal of Honor.

"No carrier in the U.S. Navy has ever been named for a sitting president," a Navy spokesperson said, highlighting the unprecedented nature of a potential Trump namesake.

The discussion has drawn public attention, with critics questioning the appropriateness of replacing a historic honor for a Black war hero with a name linked to a contemporary political figure.
