49ers win preseason game but lose cornerback Renardo Green to hamstring injury

Summary

San Francisco defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 41-17 in a preseason matchup, while starting cornerback Renardo Green suffered a hamstring injury that will sideline him.

San Francisco posted a 41-17 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in a preseason contest on Friday, but the win was marred by an injury to starting cornerback Renardo Green. Green left the game in the first quarter after a collision with Chargers rookie receiver Brenen Thompson appeared to strain his hamstring.

Veteran cornerback Jack Jones replaced Green at the start of the second quarter. The Chargers' secondary was later tested by quarterback Justin Herbert during a joint practice, but the drive ended with a punt after six plays.

The 49ers' offense featured contributions from rookie running backs De’Zhaun Stribling and Kaelon Black. Black recorded eight carries for 33 yards, including back-to-back runs of eight and nine yards that helped move the ball into Chargers territory.

Left guard Carver Willis was noted for creating movement at the point of attack, facilitating the running game. Tight end George Kittle received an update from team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache and is expected to return to practice on Saturday, giving him a week to build cardio before the regular season.

"I haven’t felt this good since about a month before the Super Bowl," defensive end Dre Greenlaw said about his health after a series of injuries.

"It’s probably the best shape I’ve seen him in since I’ve known him," left tackle Trent Williams said of wide receiver Deebo Samuel’s condition.

The team will face the Los Angeles Rams three weeks from now, having practiced four times a week with two walk-throughs and joint sessions.
