Lions wind down training camp as defensive standout Jack Campbell shines and O-line shows growing pains

Summary

The Detroit Lions concluded Day 16 of camp with a light practice, highlighting linebacker Jack Campbell's impact on both sides of the ball while the offensive line continued to work on cohesion.

The Detroit Lions wrapped up the final day of their training camp with a brief, unpadded session that consisted of walkthroughs, individual drills, four short offensive drives and a special-teams drill, lasting less than an hour. Coach Dan Campbell said the team had completed a series of strong practices and chose to scale back the intensity for the day.

Linebacker Jack Campbell was involved in four of the nine plays run by the first-team units, recording a sack, a pass deflection, a tackle for a three-yard gain and a three-yard tackle for loss, demonstrating contributions in pass rush, coverage and run defense.

The Lions' offensive line, which has been rotating through a tentative starting group of Penei Sewell, Christian Mahogany, Juice Scruggs, Tate Ratledge and Blake Miller, showed several missed assignments during the limited snaps, including a false start and a screen pass that failed to develop. Campbell noted improvement in the center’s play but said the unit still needed more work.

Quarterback Josh Dobbs completed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Meeks during a single team rep, a play that followed an injury to Ennis Rakestraw. Dobbs is expected to start in the upcoming preseason game.

Overall, the Lions used the final practice to reinforce fundamentals while continuing to address offensive line chemistry before the regular season begins.
