Jaguars focus Travis Hunter on cornerback duties in preseason
Jacksonville is using rookie Travis Hunter mainly at cornerback during training camp, with limited offensive snaps expected for the regular season.
Travis Hunter is being utilized primarily as a defensive player in Jacksonville Jaguars’ preseason practices, signaling that he will likely serve mainly as a cornerback when the regular season begins. While the athlete expressed a desire to contribute on both offense and defense, coaches have limited his offensive involvement to occasional wide-receiver snaps.
According to reports from local journalists, Hunter did not take any 11-on-11 offensive snaps during Monday’s session, and in a joint practice with the Carolina Panthers he recorded 28 defensive snaps compared with two on offense. He also participated in a few kicking drills, missing four of five field-goal attempts, indicating that the team does not view him as a backup kicker.
Head coach Liam Coen said the staff prefers Hunter to remain on the defensive side after practice drills to continue observing and mentally processing defensive schemes, rather than switching to offense. This approach suggests the coaching staff believes his greatest impact will be on defense.
