Prince Harry and Meghan to reside in UK this fall, remain non-working royals

Summary

The Sussexes will move to a private home outside London for an extended stay beginning this autumn, while keeping their U.S. and Portuguese properties and not resuming official royal duties.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will relocate to a private residence outside London for an extended stay starting this fall, according to sources close to the couple. The move does not include a return to official royal duties, and the family will continue to maintain homes in Montecito, California, and a vacation property in Portugal.

Their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, have already been enrolled in British schools and will begin classes in September. A spokesperson for the couple declined to comment on the plans, and Buckingham Palace said it does not comment on speculation about non-working members of the royal family.

"I would love reconciliation with my family. There's no point in continuing to fight anymore. I don't know how much longer my father has," Harry told the BBC, expressing a desire to improve his relationship with King Charles III, who is undergoing treatment for an undisclosed illness.

Meghan is expected to continue leading her media company, Archewell, from the United Kingdom, while Harry plans to devote more time to his UK-based charitable work. The couple, who stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and moved to California, have faced ongoing legal disputes with the British press and a separate court case over police protection costs.

Former BBC royal correspondent Peter Hunt said the announcement is likely to upset Prince William, noting that Harry's presence in the UK could intensify pressure for family reconciliation.

The Sussexes visited the UK last month for charity events, during which the children spent time with their grandfather, King Charles, at his Highgrove estate. No public indication has been given about the state of relations with Prince William.
