Trump warns of severe economic retaliation against nations aiding Iran

President Donald Trump announced on social media that the United States will impose extensive economic measures on any country that continues business with Iran, amid ongoing tensions following the lapse of a cease-fire.

President Donald Trump said the United States will impose extensive economic measures on any nation that assists or does business with Iran. In a post on his Truth Social platform, he wrote that the U.S. is launching a large-scale economic operation against Iran, though he gave no specifics and did not name any particular country.

The statement came after a 60-day cease-fire between the United States and Iran ended without a diplomatic or military resolution. Trump’s remarks appear to build on the “Operation Economic Fury” initiative launched in April, which targets foreign banks and firms that engage with Tehran.

"ANY country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face economic consequences," Trump wrote.

He added that activities such as oil smuggling, cash transfers and the use of front companies must stop immediately. The comment followed the United Arab Emirates’ decision to cut financial and economic ties with Iran after Tehran launched ballistic missiles toward maritime traffic.

While China was not mentioned by name, it remains a major purchaser of Iranian oil, and Washington has previously sanctioned Chinese oil-processing facilities linked to Iran. China’s Ministry of Commerce has protested those sanctions as violations of international law.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently indicated that the United States plans to intensify economic isolation of Iran, including broader sanctions and a naval blockade aimed at curbing the country's revenue streams. Earlier in the week, Trump reportedly warned Oman, a U.S. ally, that it could face military action if it interfered with U.S. negotiations with Iran.
