Dodgers move closer Edwin Díaz to injured list, Tanner Scott expected to assume closing duties

Summary

Los Angeles Dodgers placed reliever Edwin Díaz on the injured list and sent him to Los Angeles for further evaluation, with right-hander Tanner Scott slated to handle most ninth-inning saves for the remainder of the season.

Los Angeles Dodgers placed closer Edwin Díaz on the injured list on Tuesday, sending him back to the team’s facilities for additional medical evaluation. The 32-year-old, who is under a three-year, $69 million contract, has struggled since returning from a previous stint on the injured list, posting an 11.85 ERA over 13 2/3 innings.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters that Díaz will undergo further assessment in Los Angeles to determine his next steps. Roberts added that the team expects right-hander Tanner Scott to assume the bulk of ninth-inning responsibilities over the final six weeks of the season.

Scott recorded his 17th save of the year in his most recent appearance, retiring the final batter in the eighth inning and preserving a two-run lead before allowing a run in the ninth. The Dodgers held on for the win, and Scott is now viewed as the logical candidate to close games while Díaz recovers.

The move comes after Díaz allowed multiple runs in recent outings, including a blown save that tied a game and a subsequent walk-off home run. Despite the recent difficulties, the team noted that Díaz is not dealing with issues related to his surgically repaired elbow and will have time to address mechanical concerns before returning to a high-leverage role.
