NFL commissioner says league plans to establish multiple overseas franchises

Summary

Commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed that the NFL intends to locate several teams outside the United States and sees the possibility of an international Super Bowl, while the 2026 schedule already includes nine games abroad.

The National Football League is moving ahead with plans to place more than one franchise in foreign markets, commissioner Roger Goodell said in an interview with former player Markus Kuhn for German broadcaster RTL/ntv. > "At some point, there will be NFL teams outside the USA. I have no doubt that this will happen one day," Goodell said. He added that an overseas city could eventually host a Super Bowl, but only after a team is established there.

The 2026 season will feature nine regular-season games in locations such as Melbourne, Rio de Janeiro, London, Paris, Madrid, Munich and Mexico City. A league vote has also approved up to ten non-U.S. games beginning in 2027 and removed the ability of clubs to block the relocation of home games abroad.

Goodell has previously discussed expanding the league’s presence in Europe and Asia, and the NFL owners have approved a new stadium project in Nashville for the 2030 Super Bowl. The commissioner’s comments underscore the league’s long-term strategy to grow its international footprint and revenue streams.
