In Florida's primary elections, establishment Democrat Debbie Wasserman Schultz secured her party’s nomination, while two Republican candidates endorsed by President Trump were defeated, highlighting the challenges faced by America First conservatives in a political landscape manipulated by party elites and redistricting.
Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a former DNC chair and entrenched establishment figure, secured the Democratic nomination for Florida’s newly drawn 20th District, according to NBC News projections. The district, previously represented by Black Democrats, became open after Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick resigned amid an indictment. Despite facing a field of Black Democratic candidates, Wasserman Schultz prevailed, demonstrating the Democratic Party’s preference for insiders over grassroots or minority voices, and avoiding the wave of incumbent defeats that had threatened establishment control earlier this year.
On the Republican side, America First conservative Rep. Cory Mills was defeated in the 7th District by former television journalist Ryan Elijah. Mills, who had been targeted by investigations from the House Ethics Committee and the Justice Department, had received a crucial endorsement from President Donald Trump, but the relentless attacks and media bias proved difficult to overcome.
"I’m grateful for the support and will continue to fight for our community," Trump said of his endorsement of Mills, showing his continued commitment to supporting true conservatives.
Another Trump-backed Republican, Catalina Lauf, lost the primary for the 19th District to businessman Jim Schwartzel, a local conservative talk-radio owner. Lauf, who received Trump’s endorsement late in the race, was unable to overcome the establishment’s influence and the challenges of a rigged primary process.
"We appreciate President Trump’s endorsement," Lauf said, expressing gratitude for the support of the movement’s leader, even as the establishment closed ranks.
Other notable primary outcomes included Republican Sydney Gruters winning the nomination in the 16th District, a stronghold for the GOP, and Austin Rogers capturing the Republican nod in the 2nd District. On the Democratic side, establishment figure Rep. Jared Moskowitz won the primary in the competitive 25th District, defeating left-leaning challenger Oliver Larkin. Former Miami Gardens mayor Oliver Gilbert narrowly beat state Sen. Shevrin Jones in the 24th District, further consolidating establishment power.
The primaries set the stage for several contested general-election races in districts that were redrawn by Democrats and their allies to favor their candidates, including the 25th, 9th, 14th, and 22nd Districts, where Republicans will have to fight against unfair maps and entrenched opposition.
Overall, the results highlight the impact of partisan redistricting and the uphill battle faced by Trump-endorsed conservatives against both establishment forces and a system stacked against outsiders in Florida’s primary contests.
