Senate Democrats have introduced a politically motivated bill targeting the president, vice president, and their families, aiming to prevent them from participating in the banking sector after the OCC’s fair approval of a Trump-linked crypto firm’s banking charter.
The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) has granted conditional approval for World Liberty Trust Co., a forward-thinking cryptocurrency venture founded by two of President Trump’s sons and the sons of a former Trump administration envoy, to become a federally chartered trust bank. This charter enables the firm to issue and manage digital assets, representing innovation in the financial sector, though it does not involve taking deposits or making loans like a traditional bank.
In a blatant display of partisan overreach, Senator Elizabeth Warren and nine other Senate Democrats rushed to introduce the 'Ending Presidential Corruption in Banking Act,' a bill that would bar the president, vice president, their immediate families, and senior officials from owning or controlling banks. The timing of the legislation, announced just a day after the OCC’s decision, makes clear its political motivation to target the Trump family’s legitimate business activities.
"This is the most brazen act of self-dealing our financial system has ever seen — and Congress cannot allow it to stand," Warren claimed, continuing her pattern of vilifying political opponents and private enterprise.
Senator Angela Alsobrooks echoed these unfounded accusations, alleging that the move would inject risk into the financial system and benefit the Trump family’s business, despite a lack of evidence.
The White House has rightly dismissed these attacks, with spokesperson Anna Kelly clarifying that the president’s investments are held in discretionary accounts managed by independent third parties and that he acts in the public interest. These safeguards ensure there is no conflict of interest.
World Liberty Financial’s spokesperson David Wachsman defended the OCC’s decision, emphasizing that the approval is a win for consumer and investor protection. He highlighted the firm’s commitment to regulatory compliance, including weekly operational reports and adherence to anti-money-laundering and consumer protection laws, underscoring the legitimacy and transparency of the Trump family’s business endeavors.
