Mozilla expands Firefox Smart Window AI features in beta rollout

Summary

Firefox’s Smart Window mode now lets users query AI for information from their browsing history, choose from multiple language models and see source links, while remaining an opt-in beta feature.

Mozilla has updated the Smart Window mode in its Firefox browser to allow AI-driven chats that draw on current web content and cite sources through a partnership with Exa. The feature can automatically suggest tab groups, close duplicate tabs and display visual previews of previously visited pages when users search their history with natural-language queries.

In a demonstration, the AI was able to locate "running shoes I looked at last week" from the user's browsing history and show related images. Mozilla says beta testers reported that the tool helped them maintain their train of thought. Future updates are planned to surface recent browsing journeys and provide AI-powered autofill for online forms.

Smart Window remains an opt-in beta. Ajit Varma, Mozilla’s head of Firefox, told The Verge that there is no set date for exiting beta and emphasized the company’s "agnostic" approach to AI, offering features without making them mandatory. Users can select from several AI models, including Google’s Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite, OpenAI’s oss-gpt-120b, Alibaba’s Qwen3-235B-A22B-Instruct-2507, or local models, to support digital sovereignty.

Steve Truong, senior staff product manager for Firefox AI, said the models operate under zero-data-retention contracts, meaning prompts are processed in memory and not stored for training, advertising or human review. Mozilla also does not retain user chats on its servers without permission.

The company added a top navigation bar to Smart Window after user feedback, reflecting its "user-first, user-centric" development philosophy.
