NFL commissioner says league will eventually field a team outside the United States
Commissioner Roger Goodell told German media that a permanent NFL franchise abroad is inevitable, and such a market could later host a Super Bowl.
Commissioner Roger Goodell said the National Football League is likely to establish a permanent franchise outside the United States as part of its ongoing international expansion. In an interview with German broadcaster RTL/ntv, Goodell told former player Markus Kuhn that a non-U.S. team will happen "one day" and expressed confidence in the prospect.
Goodell added that an overseas team could eventually become a venue for a Super Bowl, noting that several international cities have the capacity to host such an event, but the league would first need a resident team in that market.
NFL executive vice president Peter O'Reilly previously described an international Super Bowl as not a current priority, while the league voted earlier this year to increase the number of regular-season games played abroad to as many as ten starting in 2027 and to remove teams' protections for home games from being scheduled internationally.
