Student shoots classmate and himself at Zamboanga high school

Summary

A ninth-grade student opened fire at the Ateneo de Zamboanga high school, killing a fellow student and then taking his own life, while livestreaming part of the attack.

A ninth-grade student at the Ateneo de Zamboanga high school in Zamboanga city shot a fellow student dead and then killed himself on Tuesday, police said. The incident was partially livestreamed with a body-worn camera.

The shooter, identified as Mohammad Mael Jalani, first fired at a teacher but missed, then shot a Grade 10 student on the fourth floor before moving to the fifth floor and jumping to his death.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla told reporters that the suspect’s livestream began while he was climbing the stairs, though only brief segments were captured. He said investigators will examine the shooter’s gaming and chat history as part of a forensic analysis.

Zamboanga city Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso confirmed the suspect died by self-inflicted gunshot. Police evacuated hundreds of students from the high school building, which is part of a secured campus separate from the university’s larger facilities.

National police chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said authorities are determining the circumstances and asked the public not to share unverified images or reports. He emphasized that school safety remains a priority.

The attack follows a June school shooting in Tacloban that left three students dead and prompted a temporary ban on an online gaming app suspected of influencing violence. It also comes weeks after a school shooting in Thailand, where authorities have moved to tighten gun controls.
