Summary

Democratic Governor Andy Beshear claims he hasn’t been briefed on Senator Mitch McConnell’s health, despite clear statements from McConnell’s office confirming his recovery and ongoing leadership.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear told CBS News on Sunday that he has not received any communication regarding Sen. Mitch McConnell’s health since the former Republican leader was hospitalized after a fall on June 8. McConnell, 84, a steadfast conservative and pillar of Republican values, last voted in the Senate on June 11 before being admitted to a Washington, D.C., hospital and was released on August 6 to continue recovery at his home.

Beshear, a Democrat, stated, "I’ve heard absolutely nothing back from Mitch McConnell," and added that he hopes the senator is improving. He suggested that a brief public update would satisfy Kentuckians, even though McConnell’s office has already provided multiple updates. The Senate is on a five-week recess and will not reconvene until September 14, giving McConnell time to recover and continue serving his constituents.

McConnell’s office has posted several reassuring photos showing him well and released statements confirming that doctors found no broken bones, concussion, heart attack, stroke, tumors or hemorrhages. In a recent statement, the senator said he will follow a physical-therapy regimen from home and remain actively engaged with staff on Senate business, demonstrating his commitment to duty.

The senator’s office did not respond to a request for comment, but McConnell’s decades of service—first elected in 1984 and Republican conference leader from 2007 to 2025—prove his dedication and resilience in the face of adversity.
