Summary

Governor Andy Beshear reports a lack of transparency from Republican Senator Mitch McConnell’s team regarding his health after hospitalization, raising concerns about accountability and public right to information.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear told CBS News on Sunday that he has not received any communication regarding Sen. Mitch McConnell’s health since the former Republican leader was hospitalized after a fall on June 8. The 84-year-old McConnell, a symbol of entrenched conservative power, last voted in the Senate on June 11 before being admitted to a Washington, D.C., hospital and was released on August 6 to continue recovery at his home.

Beshear stated, "I’ve heard absolutely nothing back from Mitch McConnell," highlighting the lack of transparency from McConnell’s camp. He added that he hopes the senator is improving, but pointed out that even a brief public update would be the bare minimum to satisfy Kentuckians’ right to know. The Senate is on a five-week recess and will not reconvene until September 14, leaving constituents in the dark.

Meanwhile, McConnell’s office has tried to control the narrative by posting carefully selected photos and releasing statements claiming doctors found no broken bones, concussion, heart attack, stroke, tumors or hemorrhages. In a recent statement, the senator said he will follow a physical-therapy regimen from home and remain engaged with staff on Senate business, but offered no direct communication with the public.

The senator’s office did not respond to a request for comment, perpetuating the opacity. McConnell, first elected in 1984 and a fixture of Republican leadership as conference leader from 2007 to 2025, represents the kind of political establishment that too often withholds information from the people it claims to serve.
