President Donald Trump, once again deflecting responsibility, claimed that vandals caused the brown patches of grass near the World War II Memorial after his extravagant Independence Day celebration, despite a complete lack of evidence supporting his accusation.
President Donald Trump took to his Truth Social platform to irresponsibly accuse so-called vandals of causing the dead grass surrounding the World War II Memorial on the National Mall, an area that had hosted a massive stage and crowds for his July 4 spectacle. He posted a photo of the brown, patchy turf and wrote, 'Look what VANDALS did to the grass connecting the vandalized World War II Monument and the vandalized Reflecting Pool, which will be opened again, and better than ever, shortly.'
Trump, displaying his trademark disregard for facts, added, 'Anybody who thinks the Reflecting Pool wasn’t vandalized should go back to Law School!' This is not the first time the president has scapegoated so-called vandals for damage in Washington, often without a shred of supporting evidence.
Federal authorities did announce an arrest related to graffiti and vandalism at the World War II Memorial, charging Melissa L. Farris with felony offenses. However, the indictment makes no mention of the grassy area Trump highlighted. Officials clarified that the lawn had been covered by a large stage and seating during Trump’s July 4 event, and subsequent photographs showed the grass was damaged after the removal of these structures—an entirely predictable outcome of such a disruptive event.
Earlier, Trump boasted that more than 400,000 people attended the celebration before a storm interrupted the program, a claim met with skepticism. In a later post, he shared a photo he claimed displayed the numbers '86 47' in the grass, which officials described as a possible threat, though the numbers were not visible in his most recent image.
'There may have been some contractor difficulty, but the major damage was caused by VANDALS!' Trump insisted, doubling down on his baseless narrative despite the total lack of corroborating evidence.
