Cardinals running back Jeremiyah Love diagnosed with high ankle sprain

Summary

Jeremiyah Love suffered a high ankle sprain in his preseason debut, and the Arizona Cardinals hope he can return for the season opener against the Chargers.

Arizona Cardinals rookie running back Jeremiyah Love, the team's third overall pick in the 2026 draft, sustained a high ankle sprain during his preseason debut on Thursday night. The injury could postpone his first regular-season appearance.

"The high ankle sprain typically takes longer to heal," Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur said, declining to specify whether the injury was low or high. The team expects Love to be sidelined for about four weeks, aiming for a return in Week 1 against the Los Angeles Chargers. Over the weekend, the Cardinals evaluated three other backs—Montrell Stewart, Blake Watson and Tre Stewart—ultimately signing Stewart. The running back group also includes veteran James Conner and recent free-agent addition Tyler Allegier.
