Trump and Zelenskyy Discuss Ceasefire Amid European Leaders' Push for Peace
U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with European leaders to discuss a potential ceasefire in Ukraine, with differing views on its necessity for peace negotiations.
U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy convened with European leaders at the White House on August 18, 2025, to deliberate on ending the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the collective desire for a ceasefire, stating, "The way is open for complicated negotiations. And to be honest, we all would like to see a ceasefire." He added, "The latest from the next meeting on, I can't imagine that the next meeting would [take] place without a ceasefire, so let's work on that, and let's try to put pressure on Russia."
President Trump, however, expressed a different perspective, suggesting that direct talks between Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin might be more effective. He remarked, "In the six wars that I have settled, I haven't had a ceasefire ... So if we can do the ceasefire, great, and if we don't do a ceasefire, because many other points were given to us, many, many points were given to us, great points."
This meeting follows Trump's recent summit with Putin in Alaska, where discussions about the conflict's resolution took place. European leaders continue to advocate for a ceasefire as a prerequisite for peace negotiations, while the U.S. administration appears open to alternative approaches.
