Lexington officials brief public on Charles Young Park shooting investigation
Mayor Linda Gorton, Police Chief Lawrence Weathers and One Lexington director Devine Carama provided an update on the Saturday night shooting that left one teen dead and four others injured, and outlined support services for victims.
Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton, Police Chief Lawrence Weathers and One Lexington director Devine Carama briefed the community on Saturday night’s shooting at Charles Young Park. The officials said police are pursuing every lead to identify the shooter and that the incident does not reflect the broader East End community.
The Fayette County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased victim as 16-year-old Di’Zhon Robertson, a student at Success Academy who had previously attended Bryan Station High School. Fayette County Public Schools expressed condolences and announced that mental health specialists, counselors and support teams will be available to students and staff.
Chief Weathers noted that the shooting is the first homicide in Lexington since a February 5 incident that killed 17-year-old Jonathan Hunt, ending a 192-day period without a homicide. Police responded at about 6:48 p.m., transporting five victims to a local hospital; four sustained non-life-threatening injuries while Robertson died at the hospital.
Authorities said the investigation remains active and asked anyone with information to contact Lexington Police. Support services for those present at the park will be offered at the Dunbar Community Center on Monday from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
