Six killed, including suspect, in Missaukee County shootings; teenage girl survives
A 39-year-old man suspected of the killings was found dead after a manhunt, while a 13-year-old girl remains in stable condition.
Missaukee County, Michigan, authorities reported that six people died in a series of shootings on Friday, including the suspected gunman, Chad Hickman, 39. The victims included a 16-year-old boy, a 45-year-old man, a 40-year-old woman, and a 53-year-old man whose body was discovered at a second residence. A 13-year-old girl was found critically injured but is now listed as stable.
Police said Hickman fled the initial scene, prompting a large-scale search that ended when his body was located in a wooded area alongside the 29-year-old woman. All deceased victims suffered gunshot wounds.
Lt. Ashley Miller described the incident as difficult for the community and investigators, and said the investigation remains ongoing.
Court records show Hickman had been convicted in 2024 of a misdemeanor fourth-degree child-abuse charge and sentenced to one year in jail; other felony charges were dismissed.
Local resident Tim Penrose, who lives near the second crime scene, said Hickman resided in the home and that he often heard gunfire in the rural area. Penrose noted that Hickman had previously harassed him and his wife.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer said she is monitoring the situation and expressed condolences to the victims' families and the Missaukee community.
