Multiple suspects remain at large after shooting injures five at Virginia State University

Summary

A shooting outside a residence hall at Virginia State University left five people wounded, including a student and a minor, and police say more than one shooter is still at large.

A shooting occurred outside a residence hall at Virginia State University shortly after 1:28 a.m. local time on Saturday, injuring five people, one of whom was critically hurt. All victims were taken to local hospitals; four suffered non-life-threatening injuries, while the student victim was later discharged.

Chesterfield County Police are leading the investigation, assisted by other local agencies and campus police. Lieutenant James R. Lamb told the BBC that the suspects have not been apprehended and that evidence from surveillance video is still being reviewed. He said, "We don't have anybody in custody. We know there was more than one shooter, so I would say the suspects are still at large."

The university lifted a temporary lockdown but maintains a significant law-enforcement presence on campus. Classes for the new term were scheduled to begin on Monday, and dormitories had reopened for returning students on Friday.
