Five injured in early-morning shooting at Virginia State University

Summary

At least five people were shot near the Quad Annexes at Virginia State University early Saturday; one remains in critical condition while the campus lockdown has been lifted.

Police responded to reports of gunfire near the Quad Annexes at Virginia State University in Ettrick shortly after 1:28 a.m. on Saturday and found five individuals with gunshot wounds outside the dormitory area. All victims were transported to a hospital, where one is listed in critical condition and the others sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The university confirmed that at least one of the injured was a student, who has since been released.

Campus police initially reported the incident at 1:58 a.m., prompting a lockdown that lasted several hours. The university announced at 8:22 a.m. that the lockdown had been lifted and said an increased law-enforcement presence would remain on campus.

"We recognize the concern this incident has caused among our students, parents, alumni, friends, and the broader VSU community. The safety and well-being of our students remain our highest priority. VSU Police will maintain an increased presence on campus as the investigation continues. Students should monitor their VSU email for additional safety measures currently in effect and information about available support resources," the university statement read.

The investigation is being led by the Chesterfield County Police Department, with assistance from VSU police, the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Authorities have asked the public to avoid the area and follow law-enforcement instructions.
