United flight aborts takeoff at Chicago O'Hare after tire failure
A United Airlines Boeing 737-900 aborted takeoff at Chicago O'Hare when two right-main-gear tires blew, prompting an evacuation and FAA investigation.
A United Airlines Boeing 737-900 halted its takeoff roll on Thursday at Chicago O'Hare International Airport after two tires on the right main landing gear failed. The aircraft stopped on the runway, and passengers were evacuated via stairs and later transported to the terminal by bus. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that all 161 passengers and six crew members were unharmed.
"We saw lots of chunks of tire going down the runway," said a pilot of a nearby aircraft, as heard in air-traffic-control audio.
Rescue crews reported the presence of two blown tires, and pilots informed responders that everyone on board was safe. The flight was bound for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport; United Airlines said a replacement aircraft would depart later that day. The FAA has opened an investigation into the incident.
