LSU cornerback DJ Pickett refuses to change jersey number amid dispute with former Heisman winner Jayden Daniels

Summary

LSU sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett says he will keep wearing No. 5 despite objections from former LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels, while the Washington Commanders quarterback says the issue will not affect his NFL focus.

LSU sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett told reporters Thursday that he will continue to wear jersey No. 5, a number he has worn since childhood, despite criticism from former LSU quarterback and 2023 Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels. Pickett said the number was promised to him when he committed to LSU and expressed goodwill toward Daniels, calling him a "good player" who performed well at the school.

Daniels’ legal team has notified LSU that the program can no longer use his name, image and likeness, and a spokesperson for Daniels said the family feels "deeply disappointed and profoundly disrespected" by LSU’s decision to assign his former number to another player. Daniels posted on Instagram that his focus remains on training camp with the Washington Commanders and that he hopes the issue will be resolved privately.

LSU’s athletic director has not commented, while head coach Lane Kiffin reiterated that the number was promised to Pickett during recruitment and should be honored. Former LSU coach Brian Kelly, who previously oversaw the program, indicated that the number had been promised to Pickett but was not issued because Daniels had not given his blessing.

Pickett, who led LSU with three interceptions and 37 tackles last season, previously wore No. 3 as a freshman. His father, Damien Pickett, said the family respects Kiffin for upholding the promise but expressed frustration that the situation was not clarified during recruiting. The dispute comes as LSU continues to consider jersey retirements, with several historic numbers already retired or slated for retirement.
