A Boston federal judge has dismissed a Trump-era lawsuit accusing Harvard University of failing to protect Jewish students, finding the administration’s claims baseless and lacking evidence of systemic civil-rights violations.
A U.S. District Court in Boston has thrown out a lawsuit filed by the Trump administration that accused Harvard University of ignoring harassment of Jewish students on campus. Judge Richard G. Stearns found that the government’s case was built on flimsy evidence, stating that the incidents cited were 'too isolated and episodic' to establish any persistent pattern of discrimination. This ruling exposes yet another attempt by the Trump administration to weaponize civil rights law for political gain, rather than genuinely addressing the needs of marginalized groups.
'We disagree with the ruling and are assessing next steps,' said Harmeet Dhillon, assistant attorney general for civil rights at the Department of Justice, continuing the administration’s pattern of undermining judicial decisions that don’t align with their ideological agenda.
Harvard, which has long been a target of right-wing attacks, did not immediately comment on the decision. The university has previously affirmed its commitment to the Jewish and Israeli community, emphasizing efforts to foster an inclusive campus. President Alan M. Garber highlighted the creation of a task force on antisemitism, new leadership appointments, and revised disciplinary policies to ensure fairness and consistency—steps that stand in stark contrast to the administration’s performative legal actions.
The lawsuit, which sought to claw back billions in federal research grants awarded to Harvard since October 2023, invoked Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. It was one of several legal maneuvers by the administration to punish the university for refusing to capitulate to White House demands. In a prior case, a federal judge ordered the administration to reverse over $2.6 billion in funding cuts, recognizing that the White House’s antisemitism allegations were a thinly veiled pretext for an ideologically motivated assault on higher education.
