Luis Castillo's changeup fuels White Sox shutout of Reds

Summary

Luis Castillo struck out 10 batters, including six on changeups, as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Cincinnati Reds 5-0, improving their division lead.

Luis Castillo delivered a career-high 10 strikeouts in seven shutout innings as the Chicago White Sox beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-0 on Saturday. The right-hander relied heavily on his changeup, throwing 20 of the pitch in a 104-pitch outing and recording half of his strikeouts with the off-speed offering.

"That's the result when you have confidence in your pitches, confidence in your plan and we had a very good plan today," Castillo said through an interpreter.

Castillo also contributed defensively with a scoop and flip on a bunt attempt in the fifth inning. The White Sox added runs in the sixth and eighth innings, highlighted by a two-run homer from Julian Garcia and a solo shot by Drew Romo. Relievers Hagen Smith and Huascar Brazobán closed the game without allowing a baserunner, preserving the shutout.

The Reds managed only one hit, a single by Sal Stewart, and were unable to reach scoring position at any point. Their lone defensive highlight came when Tristan Peters made a leaping catch to prevent a potential extra-base hit. Chicago’s win extended its division lead to 3½ games.
