Big Sur Timber Fire expands to nearly 4,000 acres, threatens 350 structures

Summary

The Timber Fire in Big Sur has burned about 3,775 acres, is 5% contained and endangers roughly 350 homes and tourist facilities as firefighters continue suppression efforts.

A wildfire known as the Timber Fire has spread to approximately 3,775 acres in the Big Sur region, with containment at about 5% on Wednesday afternoon. Cal Fire spokesperson Adrienne Freeman said the blaze threatens around 350 structures, including homes along Partington Ridge Road and several tourist sites.

Fire crews are focusing on establishing a continuous containment line behind clusters of homes rather than defending individual properties, a strategy complicated by the area’s steep, heavily vegetated canyons. Access to some properties is limited to narrow one-lane roads, overgrown driveways and old trails.

The firefighting effort was temporarily disrupted by cloud-to-ground lightning, which forced crews to retreat to safety zones. Freeman noted that such atmospheric instability can cause fire spread in multiple directions. Although rain from the storm may aid work in lower elevations, it is not expected to extinguish the fire.

Highway 1 remains closed between Fernwood Resort and the Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park Vista Point, with the road serving as a corridor for moving equipment. Freeman said about 1,000 firefighters are on the scene and more are expected in the coming days, while visibility remains limited due to smoke and fog.

The fire has not caused any reported injuries or structural damage, and its cause is still under investigation. Local businesses, including the Nepenthe restaurant, the Ventana Inn and the Henry Miller Memorial Library, face potential revenue losses as the closure impacts the peak tourist season.
