Three family members found dead in suspected murder-suicide at Hopkins home daycare

Summary

Police say a man, woman and child were killed in an apparent murder-suicide at an in-home daycare in Hopkins, while six other children were unharmed.

Hopkins police are investigating a possible murder-suicide that left a man, a woman and a child dead at an in-home daycare on the 200 block of Tyler Avenue North on Wednesday morning. The investigation began after a parent who was dropping off a child reported hearing a stabbing around 9 a.m., according to Police Chief Brent Johnson.

Johnson said the deceased adults are believed to be the daycare owners and that preliminary evidence points to the man as the perpetrator. Six other children who were present at the facility were not injured and have been returned to their families.

Neighbors described the couple as friendly and expressed shock at the incident. The police chief emphasized that the event appears to be isolated and poses no ongoing threat to the public. Investigators are still determining the exact nature of the injuries and the weapons involved.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey offered condolences and said the city would assist Hopkins in any needed capacity.
