Detroit Lions identify top performers and setbacks after two weeks of training camp
Coach Dan Campbell highlighted several players who have emerged as standouts, while a few others have fallen behind expectations during the early phase of Detroit Lions training camp.
Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell said the first two weeks of camp have revealed clear winners and losers as the team shifts toward preseason preparation. Cornerback Nick Whiteside, who began on the second and third teams, earned first-team reps after a series of strong plays and the injury to D.J. Reed, moving him out of the roster bubble. Edge rusher Ahmed Hassanein has become the unquestioned backup to Tyler Lacy, contributing on special teams and in defensive drills. Defensive tackle Alim McNeill showed a return of explosiveness after a torn ACL, prompting optimism about his 2026 season. Safety Chuck Clark impressed coaches with his communication, instincts and aggressive run support, while cornerback Rock Ya-Sin has taken on a starting role and performed well against the Lions’ top receivers. Undrafted quarterback Luke Altmyer earned praise from Campbell for handling tough situations and displaying poise, accuracy and arm strength, positioning him as a contender for the backup job. Running back Jabari Small, despite knee discomfort, has been active on special teams and remains in a close competition with Jacob Saylors for a roster spot. The entire linebacking group, including Derrick Barnes, Damone Clark and recent addition Devin White, has shown speed, downhill play and solid coverage in drills.
On the downside, offensive tackle Giovanni Manu was placed on the non-football injury list after failing to report an offseason injury, effectively ending his chances for the season. Wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa has struggled in one-on-one drills and against press coverage, limiting his ability to create separation. Edge rusher Payton Turner suffered a back tweak after a single practice and has not returned, reducing his prospects amid the rise of Hassanein and rookie Derrick Moore. Cornerback Ennis Rakestraw, who has been overtaken on the depth chart by Whiteside, was told by Campbell that he needs to string together consistent performances to secure a roster spot.
