49ers and Titans hold joint practice with strong defensive showings
The San Francisco 49ers and Tennessee Titans conducted a joint practice in Santa Clara, featuring intense early scrimmages, notable pass-rush performances and positive remarks about rookie contributions.
San Francisco and Tennessee met for a joint practice on Tuesday in Santa Clara, where the first ten minutes saw a series of scuffles involving several defensive players. Linebacker Fred Warner told reporters the team would not "get through today if we continue on this path" and said the unit had found its groove after the early intensity.
The 49ers' pass rush applied consistent pressure on Titans quarterback Ryan Ward, with players such as Alfred Collins recording a sack and edge rushers disrupting the offense despite the absence of star defensive end Nick Bosa. Titans analysts noted that the loss of their top two left tackles early in the session may have contributed to the pressure they faced.
In the secondary, Titans defenders Upton Stout, Ji’Ayir Brown and Jakob Robinson each recorded interceptions, while Renardo Green logged several pass breakups. Warner praised the secondary, saying he had never felt as confident heading into the 2026 season.
Rookie linebacker Jaden Dugger impressed coaches with his ability to play in five-man fronts, prompting Warner to describe his skill set as "rare" and likening his speed to that of a deer. Another rookie, Larry Worth, is working to earn a practice-squad spot through special-teams contributions.
Quarterback Brock Purdy completed the majority of his throws, missing only four passes, and highlighted the development of receiver Demarcus Robinson, calling him one of the best one-on-one matchups he has played with. Wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling led the drills with seven receptions, drawing attention for his smooth catching technique.
Tight end Jake Tonges caught multiple passes in the session, and head coach Kyle Shanahan noted that the tight-end groups have performed well in camp, suggesting a potential increased role for two-tight-end sets if the offensive line faces challenges.
