Patriots' joint practice sees backup quarterback shine as run defense falters

Summary

In a two-hour joint session with the Indianapolis Colts, New England backup quarterback Tommy DeVito emerged as the practice standout, while the Patriots' run defense struggled against Jonathan Taylor.

New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts held a two-hour joint practice behind Gillette Stadium on Tuesday as part of preseason preparations. Backup quarterback Tommy DeVito was highlighted for his performance, completing a one-minute drill touchdown pass to Eli Raridon and connecting on deep throws to Kyle Williams and Mack Hollins. DeVito said, "It’s a different world… to be able to actually take everything from the classroom and bring it to the field — physically learn mistakes — that’s personally how I learn my best. So, it’s good for me."

Starting quarterback Drake Maye completed 15 of 23 passes in 11-on-11 work and 4 of 6 in 7-on-7 drills, though his final one-minute drill pass was intercepted. Wide receiver DeMario Douglas performed well in one-on-one drills, showcasing speed and leaping ability, and was Maye’s primary target before the interception. Tight ends Hunter Henry and Eli Raridon were active early, each catching multiple passes, including touchdowns from DeVito.

The Patriots' run defense showed vulnerabilities, allowing Jonathan Taylor to dominate ground play for the Colts. Defensive end Christian Barmore saw limited action, and edge defender Dre’Mont Jones recorded a tackle for loss against Taylor. Cornerback Kobee Minor, filling in for the absent Christian Gonzalez, was penalized for defensive pass interference and later replaced by rookie Karon Prunty.

Other notable plays included edge defender Elijah Ponder recording a strip sack and safety John Saunders Jr. intercepting a pass from Colts backup Riley Leonard. The teams will meet again for their preseason opener on Thursday, Aug. 13, at 7:30 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium.
