Boomer Esiason Criticizes WNBA Player DiJonai Carrington Over Post on White Privilege
Former NFL MVP Boomer Esiason questioned DiJonai Carrington's Instagram post about white privilege after her flagrant foul and ejection in a WNBA game, describing the incident as a targeted attack.
Former NFL MVP Boomer Esiason said on his WFAN radio show that DiJonai Carrington's Instagram Threads post mentioning "white privilege" after her flagrant-2 foul on Sophie Cunningham appeared to be a targeted attack. The incident occurred in the first quarter of the Chicago Sky-Indiana Fever game on Aug. 8, when Carrington was ejected following a video-reviewed foul.
"She immediately gets on her phone and puts out a post on Threads talking about white privilege. How is everybody supposed to react to that?" Esiason asked co-host Gregg Giannotti on the "Boomer and Gio" program.
"I think because of the timeline of everything, because of, if you want to call it, the jealous nature, the legitimate hatred for somebody because of what they believe in and because of what they look like and because of how popular they are, I could say it's a targeted attack," Esiason added.
Giannotti agreed, stating that many people viewed the foul as a targeted attack. The WNBA has not released a statement regarding Carrington's foul or her social-media post, despite inquiries from media outlets.
Cunningham previously spoke to ESPN about her views on transgender participation in women's sports, saying she has faced criticism but maintains she seeks to protect young female athletes. A March 2025 New York Times poll found that 79% of Americans support barring men from competing in women's sports.
Carrington returned to the Sky's lineup on Monday, scoring 26 points in a 97-88 loss to the Seattle Storm.
