California bald eagle Jackie dies after weeks of veterinary care
Jackie, a bald eagle featured in a popular live-stream nest cam, died on Monday following intensive treatment at the Ojai Raptor Center.
Jackie, a bald eagle that had been monitored through the Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam in California, died on Monday after several weeks of veterinary treatment. The bird had been under the care of the Ojai Raptor Center following an attack by other eagles, which left her with anemia and significant weight loss.
"Over the past several days, her condition continued to deteriorate despite intensive treatment and the combined efforts of our veterinary team and consulting specialists," the center said in a statement. The livestream, operated by the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley, had attracted hundreds of thousands of subscribers who followed Jackie and her mate, Shadow, since the eagle hatched in 2012. "Our team is heartbroken. It has been an extraordinary privilege to care for her," the Ojai Raptor Center added, noting the broader public response. The center said it is cooperating with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and will release a more detailed statement on Jackie’s treatment and test results.
