Berkshire Hathaway Invests in UnitedHealth Amid Portfolio Adjustments
Berkshire Hathaway has acquired a significant stake in UnitedHealth Group and made other notable portfolio changes, including reducing its holdings in Apple and Bank of America.
Berkshire Hathaway, led by Warren Buffett, has disclosed a new investment in UnitedHealth Group, acquiring 5.04 million shares valued at approximately $1.57 billion as of June 30, 2025. This move comes as UnitedHealth faces challenges such as rising medical costs, federal investigations, and a significant cyberattack last year. Following the announcement, UnitedHealth's stock surged 8.5% in after-hours trading.
In addition to the UnitedHealth investment, Berkshire Hathaway has made several other portfolio adjustments. The conglomerate reduced its holdings in Apple by 20 million shares, bringing its total to 280 million shares, though Apple remains its largest stock holding. Berkshire also trimmed its position in Bank of America and exited its stake in T-Mobile US. New or increased stakes were revealed in companies such as DR Horton, Lennar, Allegion, Lamar Advertising, and Nucor.
Despite these acquisitions, Berkshire was a net seller of stocks for the 11th consecutive quarter, selling $3 billion more than it purchased. The company ended June with $344.1 billion in cash and equivalents. Buffett, nearing his 95th birthday, is expected to remain chairman when Greg Abel becomes CEO in January 2026.
