Drone strike on Nizhnekamsk kills 13, wounds 75, regional officials say

Summary

Russian authorities in Tatarstan reported that a Ukrainian drone attack on the city of Nizhnekamsk killed 13 people, including a child, and injured 75 others, while Ukrainian forces claimed to have hit an oil refinery.

Russian officials in the Tatarstan region said a Ukrainian drone attack on Monday hit the city of Nizhnekamsk, killing 13 people, among them a child, and wounding 75. The city, an important oil-refining hub with two refineries and a petrochemical plant, was described by regional head Rustam Minnikhanov’s press service as having been subjected to a "massive" drone assault targeting both industrial and civilian facilities.

Ukraine’s General Staff claimed its forces struck the Taneco oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, igniting a fire. Independent verification of the claims from either side was not available.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the attacks are part of a campaign to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin into negotiations and to end the invasion that began more than four years ago. He added on social media,

"We do deliver entirely justified responses, and every Russian strike will be met with our response. Russia’s war will be felt more and more at their own home – in Russia."

The incident follows a pattern of increasingly long-range Ukrainian drone operations that have reached deep into Russian territory, including Siberia, according to defence analysts. Russia has also continued aerial attacks on Ukraine, which the United Nations says have caused thousands of civilian casualties.
