Six-Planet Alignment Visible in August 2025 Morning Sky

Summary

In August 2025, a rare celestial event will allow observers to see six planets aligned in the early morning sky, with optimal viewing just before sunrise.

In August 2025, skywatchers have the opportunity to observe a rare celestial event known as a planetary parade, where six planets align in the early morning sky. This phenomenon, the last of its kind until 2028, will be visible from August 17 to 20.

During this period, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, and Mercury can be seen with the naked eye, while Uranus and Neptune require binoculars or a telescope. The optimal time for viewing is approximately an hour before sunrise, looking eastward. Venus and Jupiter will appear closely together, resembling "cat's eyes," according to Carolyn Sumners of the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

Mercury will reach its greatest elongation west on August 19, making it more visible before it disappears into the sun's glare. Observers are advised to find a location with a clear, unobstructed view of the eastern horizon and minimal light pollution. Justin Bartel from the Science Museum of Virginia notes that the planets will appear as bright pinpoints of light that don't twinkle like stars.

As the month progresses, a crescent moon will join the alignment, enhancing the visual spectacle. The next significant planetary alignment is expected in February 2026.
