Republican pollster says Trump’s economic approval at 30 percent ahead of midterms

Résumé

Polling analyst Kristen Soltis Anderson noted that President Trump’s approval of his handling of the economy is at 30 percent, a level she described as low, and warned that his refusal to acknowledge responsibility could hurt Republican prospects in the upcoming midterm elections.

Republican polling expert Kristen Soltis Anderson told the State of the Union Sunday program that President Donald Trump’s approval rating for the economy stands at 30 percent, which she characterized as “extraordinarily poor.” Anderson said the rating reflects a loss of support among swing voters who previously viewed Trump as competent on economic issues.

“Thirty percent approval on the economy is extraordinarily poor,” Anderson said.

She added that Trump’s strategy of distancing himself from the administration’s performance may alienate voters, noting that a message acknowledging limited progress and a commitment to continue working would be more effective than dismissing criticism.

“If his message was, ‘We get it, we haven’t made enough progress, but let’s keep the faith…’ that would be much better than this, like, ‘La la la. Everything’s fine.’”

Trump, when questioned by a news outlet, maintained that many consider him one of the nation’s greatest presidents and that the public “sees the results.”

A CNN poll released in late July showed Trump’s overall approval at a low point, with 30 percent for the economy, 28 percent for his handling of Iran, 25 percent for inflation, and 21 percent for gas prices.

The polling data suggests challenges for the Republican Party as it approaches the midterm elections.
