Vikings hold slower practice as quarterbacks continue short-pass battle
Minnesota Vikings held a hotter, slower training-camp session focusing on special teams and install work, with quarterbacks Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy limited to short throws against a strong defensive unit.
The Minnesota Vikings practiced at the TCO Performance Center under hotter, sunnier conditions, with a slower overall pace and an emphasis on special-teams drills and two install periods. Quarterback competition continued between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy, but both were restricted to short, routine passes as the defense limited deeper attempts. Murray completed a deep back-shoulder pass to Jauan Jennings that fell incomplete when Jennings stepped out of bounds, and a later deep throw to Justin Jefferson was also incomplete after a penalty on the offensive line. In a red-zone drill, Murray and Jefferson attempted a back-shoulder throw that initially missed but later connected after coaching input.
McCarthy’s 11-on-11 drills featured a scramble that resulted in a low pass to Tai Felton, which was negated by a penalty, and a 15-yard attempt that was broken up by defender Charles Demmings. Both quarterbacks made more downfield attempts in team drills, but the Vikings’ defense continued to force short completions.
Defensive highlights included Charles Demmings recording multiple pass break-ups, defensive tackle Eric Johnson II tipping a McCarthy pass, and Eric Wilson registering a near-sack. Defensive tackle Elijah Williams contributed a stop on a Jordan Mason run, while Demond Claiborne displayed a notable jump cut that could have resulted in a touchdown run. Special-teams leader Ivan Pace Jr. was referenced by head coach Matt Daniels as a core contributor, suggesting a roster spot despite recent additions.
Offensive updates noted Tai Felton substituting for Jordan Addison, who is recovering from a stubbed finger but participated in drills. The Vikings plan a night practice the following day.
