DiJonai Carrington ejected after flagrant foul on Sophie Cunningham
Chicago Sky forward DiJonai Carrington was assessed a flagrant-2 foul and removed from the game after striking Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham during a breakaway play.
Chicago – DiJonai Carrington of the Chicago Sky was ejected in the first quarter of Saturday's game after officials upgraded an initial flagrant-1 call to a flagrant-2 following a review. The foul occurred when Carrington made contact with Sophie Cunningham's face and neck area as Cunningham attempted a breakaway layup, causing Cunningham to fall on her backside.
Cunningham quickly got up and confronted Carrington, prompting intervention by teammate Makayla Timpson and arena security. Officials determined that the contact involved a wind-up and follow-through with a high risk of injury to a player in a vulnerable position. Carrington, who had scored eight points before the incident, left the game and later posted a brief message on her social-media account.
"The play was reviewed and the flagrant-2 was assessed because of the potential for injury," a league spokesperson said.
The Indiana Fever went on to win the game 90-86.
