Police release drive-thru shooting video, highlight civilian interventions

Summary

Twin Falls police released footage of the Idaho In-N-Out Burger drive-thru shooting, confirming ten victims were wounded and three people killed, and noted that several civilians and an off-duty officer engaged the gunman before he died.

Twin Falls police released video on Friday showing the sequence of a mass shooting at an In-N-Out Burger drive-thru in Idaho. The footage shows the 24-year-old suspect, identified as Chad Williams, approaching the drive-thru window four times and opening fire, killing an employee inside the restaurant. Police said ten people were shot at various locations, including inside the restaurant, outside the building, on a nearby road and at a charging station in a visitors-center lot.

Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks said investigators have not yet determined a motive and that Williams later killed himself as officers closed in, with his body found near a canyon. Hicks described the incident as “violent, frightening and deeply traumatic.”

The video also captured a civilian who confronted the shooter on a walking trail after fleeing a nearby store. The man, identified by local media as Braxton Steube, spoke to Williams and was shot at but not hit. Hicks called the individual “a hero” for his actions, saying they may have bought time for others to escape.

Police also praised an off-duty state trooper who fired at Williams from inside the restaurant and a former police officer, A.J. James, who was wounded while confronting the gunman. The off-duty officer’s name was not released.

The victims killed were identified as Ashley Garibay, 23, of Stockton, California; Dale Schultz, 66, of Salt Lake City; and Christopher Claunch, 59, of Hagerman, Idaho. The In-N-Out location, opened in July, is the chain’s first restaurant in the state.
