Broncos Day 7 Camp Highlights Injuries and Offensive Progress

Summary

Day 7 of Denver Broncos training camp saw quarterback Bo Nix lead a two-minute drill touchdown, a stronger run game, and several injury updates including a season-ending Achilles tear for defensive lineman Matt Henningsen.

The Denver Broncos returned to full pads on the seventh day of camp, with quarterback Bo Nix engineering a two-minute drill touchdown as the offense simulated a late-game comeback scenario. After a first-down pass was broken up by cornerback Riley Moss, Nix connected on subsequent throws to Lil’Jordan Humphrey, Courtland Sutton and ultimately Evan Engram for the score with seconds remaining.

The run game also showed improvement, as starter JK Dobbins and rookie Jonah Coleman posted notable gains. Coach Sean Payton highlighted Coleman as a "pleasant surprise" of the camp, noting his potential impact in the upcoming preseason.

Injuries continued to affect the roster. Defensive lineman Matt Henningsen suffered a torn Achilles, the second such injury in as many years, ending his season. Wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. left practice after pulling up on a route, with the nature of his injury yet to be confirmed. Tight end Nate Adkins also exited the session with a trainer.

Positive news included the return of pass rusher Nik Bonitto to full pads and the full-practice participation of veteran wide receiver Courtland Sutton. Star receiver Jaylen Waddle remained on the field but did not practice, with head coach Sean Payton estimating a return in four to six days.

Coach Payton departed early to attend Drew Brees’s Hall of Fame ceremony, leaving defensive coordinator Vance Joseph to run practice. Several veterans, including Garett Bolles, DJ Jones and Malcolm Roach, received veteran rest days, while younger players such as linebacker Red Murdock and cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian received commendations for their performances.

"It’s healthy competition is what we like to call it. At the end of the day, everybody’s job is on the line, but to come out here and compete, push each other, make sure everybody’s doing their job, helping each other out when it’s needed," said wide receiver Pat Bryant.

The Broncos plan a controlled scrimmage for the following day as they continue to address depth concerns on the defensive line and wide receiver positions.
