Trump Wins Emergency Stay Blocking BBC Financial Disclosure, Drops Brand Damage Claim

Resumen

U.S. magistrate judge grants Trump a temporary order preventing the BBC from obtaining his trust's financial records, after he withdrew the claim that the network harmed his brands and businesses.

President Donald Trump filed an emergency motion in his $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the BBC, seeking to halt the broadcaster’s request for detailed financial information on the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust, which is managed by his son. U.S. Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Lett issued a stay on Thursday that temporarily blocks the BBC from accessing tax returns, financial statements and ownership records.

"Counsel for the Plaintiff—who also represents the Trust—testified at the July 27, 2026, discovery hearing that the Plaintiff no longer intends to pursue a damages theory premised on injury to the plaintiff’s brands and businesses," the judge wrote in the order.

Trump had sued the BBC in December over a Panorama documentary that edited together portions of his January 6, 2021 speech. While he initially claimed the program caused economic harm to his businesses, he dropped that allegation ahead of the deadline to produce supporting financial documents.

A Trump attorney told the court that the lawsuit now focuses solely on reputational injury to the president, without addressing brand damage. The BBC’s lawyers responded that seeking $10 billion in damages while denying business injury makes it unlikely the plaintiff can substantiate the claim.

Trump’s team described the BBC’s disclosure request as overly broad and argued it would cause irreversible harm to the trust. The emergency stay remains in effect pending further rulings, and the court may later decide whether the BBC is entitled to the requested financial information.
