President Trump has renewed his attempt to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, citing unproven mortgage fraud allegations, after the Supreme Court blocked a prior effort.
President Donald Trump has issued a new demand that Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook be removed, alleging she provided false statements on mortgage applications. The request follows a Supreme Court decision that halted an earlier attempt to oust the governor. Deputy White House Chief of Staff Daniel Scavino sent a letter to Cook this week asking her to respond to the accusations, which were first raised by mortgage industry figure William Pulte, who oversees Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
"Even if your conduct does not rise to the level of felony offense, it appears to demonstrate a level of gross negligence in financial transactions that calls into question your competence and trustworthiness as a financial regulator," the letter said. Cook has denied any wrongdoing. Her attorney, Abbe Lowell, said the claims are unfounded and that the administration will contest the effort to remove her, emphasizing the importance of the Fed’s independence. The renewed push was first reported by a major broadcast network. Trump’s earlier attempt to dismiss Cook occurred while he criticized the central bank for not lowering interest rates more aggressively and also threatened to fire then-Fed Chair Jerome Powell, whose term ended in May but who remains on the board.
