Police release surveillance video of Idaho In-N-Out Burger shooting

Summary

Twin Falls police shared footage of a mass shooting that left three dead and ten injured, and praised a civilian who confronted the gunman before he took his own life.

Twin Falls police released surveillance video showing a gunman opening fire multiple times at the drive-through window of an In-N-Out Burger on Saturday, killing an employee and wounding several others. The footage also captured the shooter moving outside the restaurant and onto a nearby trail, where a civilian engaged him and distracted him from pursuing additional victims. The gunman, identified as 24-year-old Chad Williams, later died by suicide as officers closed in.

Police chief Matthew Hicks said a total of ten people were shot in the incident, which occurred at the recently opened Twin Falls location, about 130 miles southeast of the state capital. The victims killed were identified as Ashley Garibay, 23, of Stockton, California; Dale Schultz, 66, of Salt Lake City; and Christopher Claunch, 59, of Hagerman, Idaho. Investigators have not disclosed a motive.

Hicks praised a man who confronted the shooter on the trail, calling him a hero for his “courage, composure and selflessness” that allowed others to escape. An off-duty state trooper and a former police officer, A.J. James, were also commended for confronting the gunman; James was wounded while attempting to direct workers out of the building.

One witness, Braxton Steube, recounted speaking to the shooter on the trail, offering to cooperate and urging him to stop, before the gunman fired at him and missed. Williams had briefly attended the College of Southern Idaho and previously lived in Arizona.
