Rep. Max Miller pledges $1 million to his own campaign amid calls for resignation

Summary

Republican Rep. Max Miller announced he will contribute $1 million to his re-election effort despite growing pressure from GOP colleagues to quit following domestic-abuse allegations.

Republican U.S. Representative Max Miller said he will fund his own campaign with a $1 million contribution as fellow GOP lawmakers intensify calls for him to withdraw from the race. The pressure follows accusations from his ex-wife, Emily Moreno, that Miller engaged in physical and verbal abuse, including an incident involving hot water and a firearm, and a February episode that allegedly left their infant daughter with a broken collarbone. Miller has denied the claims, attributing them to his ex-wife’s mental-health issues and a custody dispute.

A recent poll released Thursday showed Miller trailing his Democratic opponent, Brian Poindexter, by 14 points, a decline from a five-point lead in late July. The poll linked the drop to increased awareness of the allegations, with awareness rising from 53% to 86% over the past week. Among Republican voters, 38% now view Miller unfavorably, compared with 30% who view him favorably.

Poindexter, who is not focusing his campaign on the allegations, told Politico that his priority is “working families” rather than “running against Max Miller.” He added that the accusations are “very credible and very outrageous” and that if proven true, Miller should face jail.

Sen. Bernie Moreno, father of the accuser, joined other Republicans in urging Miller to resign, describing him as a “danger to my daughter” who needs “serious psychological help.”
