Argentina backs FIFA chief Infantino as CONMEBOL voices concern

Summary

The Argentine Football Association announced its support for FIFA president Gianni Infantino, contrasting with CONMEBOL's recent criticism of FIFA's unilateral actions.

The Argentine Football Association issued a statement supporting FIFA president Gianni Infantino, shortly after the South American Football Confederation expressed concern over what it described as repeated unilateral moves by FIFA. The AFA’s message, released early Friday, addressed Infantino directly and praised the administration’s ten-year track record, noting the recent decision to abandon a controversial commercial project and the president’s apology to member associations.

"We would like to express to you, and to FIFA's administration through you, our support for the administration that has been carried out over the past ten years," the statement read.

The association highlighted Infantino’s acknowledgment of mistakes in the abandoned plan and described his leadership as fostering dialogue with all member associations and continental confederations. It added that, with the next FIFA congress approaching, the AFA remains convinced that continued work under Infantino’s leadership is essential for developing inclusive football.

CONMEBOL, which includes Argentina as a member, had earlier voiced unanimous concern about FIFA’s unilateral actions and hinted it might withhold support in the 2027 presidential election, where Infantino is currently the sole candidate. European federations continue to oppose him, while other confederations are divided or supportive, setting a contentious backdrop for the upcoming election.
