Houthi strikes wound civilians in Saudi Najran region following deadly attack in Yemen

Summary

A Houthi projectile attack on Saudi Arabia's Najran border area injured 11 civilians, a day after the group launched its deadliest assault on Yemeni government forces in two years.

The Saudi-led coalition said 11 civilians were wounded late Thursday when projectiles fired by Houthi forces struck residential areas in the Najran border region. The injured included seven Saudi nationals, a Yemeni, two Egyptians and a Pakistani, among them a woman and a four-year-old child who suffered second-degree burns, coalition spokesman Major General Turki Al-Malki said.

Al-Malki accused the Houthis of deliberately targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, violating international humanitarian law, and said coalition forces would continue taking deterrent measures to protect civilians.

The border strike followed a large-scale missile and drone assault on military camps in Yemen's Marib and Hadramout governorates, which local sources reported killed at least 58 government soldiers and wounded dozens, marking the deadliest attack on Yemen’s internationally recognised government forces since 2022.

The coalition reiterated Saudi Arabia’s support for Yemen’s recognised government, expressed condolences to the families of the dead and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

The incidents come amid heightened tensions after the Houthis ended a fragile truce, welcomed an Iranian aircraft into Sanaa and announced a maritime blockade of Saudi ports, prompting a new cycle of hostilities in the region.
