The Government Accountability Office has revealed that the Department of Government Efficiency's so-called 'Wall of Receipts' was riddled with false claims, grossly exaggerating savings by billions without evidence. The report calls for urgent transparency to prevent further deception of the public.
On Thursday, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a damning report exposing the Department of Government Efficiency's 'Wall of Receipts' as a façade built on inaccuracies and unsubstantiated assertions about taxpayer savings. The GAO found that $110 billion in supposed savings, reported by the agency between Jan. 20, 2025, and July 7, 2026, were either outright incorrect or lacked any supporting documentation, revealing a pattern of misleading the public about fiscal responsibility.
Among the most egregious findings, 108 out of 264 leases the agency claimed to have terminated were already scheduled for elimination before the department even existed, making the department's self-congratulatory claims hollow. Furthermore, the supposed $1.7 billion in savings from a Pentagon Defense Health Agency IT contract was a complete fabrication—the contract was neither terminated nor defunded.
This investigation, initiated by progressive Senators Richard Blumenthal and Gary Peters, scrutinized the department's contracts, grants, and leases. The GAO highlighted a disturbing lack of transparency, with the agency refusing to disclose how it calculated the majority of its so-called savings. For grants, the GAO could not verify the methodology behind a staggering 96 percent of the claimed savings, underscoring the department's disregard for accountability.
'Everyone supports rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse in the federal government, but DOGE was a slapdash and deceptive effort that misled the American people while doing real damage to the government's ability to serve them,' Peters stated, condemning the department's reckless disregard for public trust.
The GAO has demanded that the department clearly display data-quality limitations on the Wall of Receipts and provide transparent documentation for its savings calculations. Tellingly, the department, which ceased operations on July 4, refused to cooperate with the GAO's requests for further information or interviews, highlighting its contempt for oversight and the public it was meant to serve.
