Police say Elijah Bieniemy called authorities before shooting his mother in Virginia

Summary

Loudoun County officials report that Elijah Bieniemy called police two days before allegedly shooting his mother, citing a dispute over firearms, and was later arrested on multiple firearm charges.

Loudoun County police arrested 27-year-old Elijah Zion Bieniemy on July 26 after he allegedly shot his mother, Mia Bieniemy, at their Ashburn home. According to an incident report, Bieniemy had called police two days earlier from the same residence, claiming his parents were withholding his firearms and expressing concern that he could not defend himself. The report said he mentioned being a certified UFC fighter and holding a CPR license, and that his parents would only return the weapons if he left the home.

The sheriff's office confirmed that officers responded to the 20000 block of Northpark Drive, found Mia Bieniemy with gunshot wounds and took Elijah Bieniemy into custody. He faces charges of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. He is being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center pending a mental-health competency evaluation, as court filings indicate he may be unable to assist in his own defense.

Elijah Bieniemy is the son of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, who previously held the same position from 2018 to 2022 and returned to the role this year after stints with other teams and a college program.
