WNBA star Caitlin Clark declines comment on teammate's trans-sports remarks
Caitlin Clark said she prefers to focus on basketball and left discussion of Sophie Cunningham's comments about transgender athletes to leagues and governing bodies.
WNBA guard Caitlin Clark said she does not plan to comment on teammate Sophie Cunningham's recent remarks about restricting participation of transgender athletes in women's sports, stating that such issues are for leagues and governing bodies to address.
Clark told reporters, "I think that's for leagues and governing bodies to work with their athletes to find solutions, but our focus is on basketball. That's what we talk about and how we can get wins, and obviously we didn't do that tonight."
The comments come amid a broader public debate over transgender participation in women's athletics, with various media figures and commentators previously urging Clark to address related controversies. Some have characterized Clark's decision to stay out of the discussion as a refusal to engage, while others have defended her right to concentrate on her sport.
Cunningham, who has spoken publicly about her view that biological males should not compete in female categories, has faced both support and criticism for her stance. The conversation reflects ongoing political and cultural divisions surrounding trans-inclusion policies in sports.
Despite the media attention, Clark has continued to perform at a high level, averaging 26.1 points and 8.6 assists over a recent seven-game stretch, the second-best in WNBA history.
